Marta Lagomarsino is a Technologist at the Human-Robot Interfaces and Interaction (HRII) Laboratory of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, where she develops and supports research at the intersection of collaborative robotics and human modelling. Her work focuses on developing AI methods to model human states and skills from multimodal and body-language cues, and enable robots to better understand, learn from, and adapt to humans in industrial and healthcare environments.
She received her PhD cum laude in 2023 from the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the HRII Lab at IIT, where she subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher. She received her MSc in Robotics Engineering in 2020 and her BSc in Biomedical Engineering in 2018, both with honours from the University of Genoa. During her MSc, she spent a semester at the University of Twente (Enschede, The Netherlands), where she conducted her Master's thesis research within the Horizon 2020 MURAB project. She has contributed to the Horizon-2020 SOPHIA project and the ERC Ergo-Lean project, and is involved in the Horizon Europe TORNADO project, the FIS Consolidator Grant EPIC, the national INAIL projects ErgoCub-CORE and VIVA, and technology transfer initiatives with industrial partners. Her work has received several awards, including the Most Promising Researcher in Robotics and AI Award at RomeCup 2023, the 2026 IEEE CIS TCDS Outstanding Paper Award, the 2025 IEEE RAS Italian Chapter Young Author Best Paper Award, and the AI and Robotics mention of the MECSPE Solution Award 2025. She serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters and as Co-Chair of the IEEE RAS Young Reviewer Program. Her research interests include cognitive and physical ergonomics monitoring, personalised physical human-robot interaction, intuitive robot programming, and adaptive robot behaviour and task planning.
